2009 Aid to Artisans Awards

Founded in 2002, the Aid to Artisans Awards recognizes individuals and institutions that have changed the nature of the handmade world through their talent and determination. Their work and lives have furthered the cause of artisan development around the world, and ATA is proud to honor their accomplishments.

2009 Awards Recipients

Artecnica – Innovation in Craft and Visionary Design Award
In 2002, Artecnica founded DESIGN WITH CONSCIENCE, a program to design and manufacture products in accordance with humanitarian and environmentally friendly principles. Artecnica has invited talented designers of international fame to contribute new ideas to an ever expanding design collection and to team them with artisans in need around the world, invigorating commerce and assisting surrounding communities.

west elm – Distinguished Partner in Craft Award
The west elm brand merges chic, polished pieces with ethnic touches to create designs with an authentic point of view. Combining natural and global influences, west elm worked with artisans in ATA’s program in India to develop fresh, accessible products. Their work and commitment to this program has established west elm as ATA’s largest retail buyer.

Hernan Zajar, Colombian fashion designer – Artisan Advocate Award
Since 2006, Hernan Zajar has worked with Aid to Artisans supporting the craft sector in Colombia. Hernan has worked with a dozen communities in Colombia where artisans have crafted fashion accessories for his collections according to his vision and designs. He has shown on the most important runways in Colombia and in Italy and Spain.

This year, we are pleased to offer a new feature enabling all of our supporters worldwide to participate in this fundraiser.
